Synopsis

Captain Marvel

Think back to your childhood, remember it; Come back for a moment to your parents' house. What do you see there? Sure you can easily rescue the afternoons you spent playing. In those hours any profession and any world fit: you were a magician, a warrior, an inventor. Growing up, those moments became more and more separated, but there is still something in you that calls you back. It is something that can happen to anyone, be it woman, man or superhero. It happens even to Captain Marvel herself. This is how my story begins, how all the stories begin. With a family. When I was little, I believed that mine was perfect.

With these lines starts the comic The Life of Captain Marvel, a series of five numbers that pretends to tell the origins of Carol Danvers. What the most powerful avenger of Marvel does not expect is that his return home is not prompted by the most beautiful memories of his family life. Quite the contrary: the painful memories are the ones that interrupt her in the middle of a battle. Behind the idealized vision of childhood is an existence that, as with many of us, is far from perfect.

On the advice of Tony Stark, Captain Marvel takes a break from her heroic labors to return to her parents' house. These buds of humanity are not strange: from a time here, many of the stories of superheroes are not led by opaque and one-dimensional beings. However, watching Carol Danvers succumb to a panic attack in the middle of a fight with the Avengers continues to be a transgressor.

In this comic, mental illness is not the characteristic feature of a villain; neither is it a moment of break that will subside from one day to the next. Danvers grew up in a dysfunctional family, and his panic attacks are the sequel to these traumatic events. His return home will be the most difficult race that Captain Marvel must fight, but also the most important.

The Life of Captain Marvel explores bluntly the emotional life of its protagonist and evades many clichés in the process. Instead of portraying emotional vulnerability as something typical of "the feminine," it presents it throughout its complex spectrum. In this facet of her adventures, Captain Marvel explores all possible ways of being and recognizing herself as a woman. Even the submissive attitudes that make him ashamed of his mother reveal themselves as the remnant of a deeper struggle, something that unites them irremediably.

So, if you want the films where they join suspense, horror and intellectuality with a little touch of humor, you should not miss this great film.
